Campbell praises reaction to coming out

Revamped Wheel of Fortune host Tim Campbell has praised the way the media and fans have reacted to his coming out and his relationship with former Australian Idol star Anthony Callea.

The singer and former Home and Away actor revealed he was gay in December and earlier this year after months of rumours, confirmed he was dating Callea.

Campbell, 32, said he was not sure how people would take the news, but was happy with how supportive everyone had been.

"People have been really good - not that they shouldn't, but you just don't know," Campbell said.

"And I think the media and fans, and he (Callea) has a huge fan base, they've all been really supportive."

Campbell, who has been appointed the host of Nine's Million Dollar Wheel, a revamp of Wheel of Fortune, said he and Callea did not like to talk too much about their relationship.

"Without kind of going you don't want to talk about it because you're not ashamed of it, the public profile is really about the work," Campbell said.

"My stuff's about the Wheel and stuff I'm doing at Nine and his is about music.

"And people have kind of respected that, which has been a good thing."

Campbell's profile has soared since leaving Home and Away last year and is set to grow more as the host of Million Dollar Wheel, which started rehearsals on Tuesday.

Campbell beat a long list of contenders for the job, leaving former Wheel of Fortune host John Burgess gutted.

Burgess, who hosted the show from 1984 until 1996, told how upset he was about missing out on the job a few months ago on his radio show.

"I haven't spoken to him but I was sent a little sound bite from his show, poor bugger," Campbell said.

"All I can say is sorry, but I don't know, sit down at 5.30 grab a beer and enjoy it mate."

Looking ahead, Campbell said he wants to act in some Nine dramas, perform in TV variety programs, be part of the Carols in Melbourne and continue doing musicals.

"I'm basically just your typical actor, (I) just want to do everything," he said.

"I'm on a bit of a good steam train at the moment, fingers crossed, otherwise I'll be back doing the actor-waitering in a couple of years."

Mel - what an uneducated mind you must have. Our sexual preferences do not make us good or bad people or better or worse at what we do. Get a life & u may be less critical of others.
