Review: What Happens In Vegas
by Annette Basile, Filmink, Filmink, 08/05/2008This romantic comedy relies on one of Hollywood's oldest recipes: throw an odd couple together, make them hate each other, and then wait for Cupid to strike. What Happens In Vegas uses screwball themes, which just reminds us of how far the genre has slid since the days of Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant. In the absence of Kate and Cary, we have to make do with Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher. But if you accept that most of today's Hollywood romantic comedies are usually pretty dire, then What Happens In Vegas is above average in comparison.
Cameron Diaz is Joy, and she's just been dumped. Ashton Kutcher is Jack, and he's just been sacked. These New Yorkers head to Las Vegas to cure their ills. They meet, get completely sloshed, and accidentally get married (hey, it happens all the time). As they discuss divorce in the cold light of sobriety, Jack plays a pokie with Joy's quarter and hits the $3 million jackpot. But whose money is it? They try to sort it out back in The Big Apple, where they appear in front of a judge who sentences them to six months' "hard marriage".
It's all very silly, of course, but Diaz is a charmer, and Kutcher is a passable romantic lead. What makes Vegas bearable is that everyone clearly had fun making this fluff-ball. There's chemistry between the leads, and they're backed by a solid supporting cast, including Queen Latifah as a marriage counsellor and Treat Williams as Jack's dad. Don't go out of your way to see this, but if you accidentally find yourself in Vegas, you might find there's a little fun to be had - especially if you've had too much to drink.
